The Raleigh Youth Hockey Association (RYHA), in conjunction with the Canes Youth and Amateur Hockey (CYAH), held tryouts for their Tier I AAA Junior Hurricanes teams on May 10-13, 2007 at The Factory Icehouse in Wake Forest.
The tryouts sought to find the Triangle’s best travel players of all ages, including Midget (16 & under), Bantam (14 & under), Peewee (12 & under), and Squirt (10 & under). The team will be the first ever Junior Hurricanes team and will be the highest-level youth team based in the Triangle area. Players from all over the Triangle attended the tryouts, and players from as far as bordering states also made the travel for the chance to compete for the team.
“The tryouts generated a lot of excitement and had a fantastic turnout,” said David Wright, Director of Travel Hockey for RYHA. “They went well beyond what we thought and expected. A lot of this was due to the Hurricanes involvement.”
CYAH is a partnership between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association, which was unveiled in March 2007. The program strives to provide sponsorship and presence in the local community in order to encourage the growth of youth hockey at all skill levels.
The Hurricanes are sponsoring the Tier I AAA teams, giving the players the chance to compete in the nation’s largest and most prestigious tournaments. Along with the sponsorship, the Hurricanes will also be dressing the Tier I teams in Hurricanes jerseys. This will be the first time the Hurricanes name and jersey will be worn by a youth hockey team, with the exception of the pee-wee Junior Hurricanes Quebec team.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for these kids to tryout for this team. Nothing like this has ever been to the Triangle, and it allows the kids to further their skills by competing with the best of the best on a national level,” said Paul Strand, the Hurricanes Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator. “The massive turnout for these tryouts demonstrates the growth of hockey in this area. This is just the beginning, as we are hoping the success of these teams will bring more excitement and enthusiasm to the sport.”
Independent evaluators were used at the tryouts to ensure proper and fair judgment in selecting players. The AAA tryout process also allowed players to pay a one-time registration fee which gave them an opportunity to tryout for the AA program without paying a separate fee. Most tryouts require players to pay a registration fee for each tier they tryout for, making the Junior Hurricanes program unique. The players themselves, however, brought the most extraordinary feature to the tryouts: their talent.
“We’re excited about the level of talent in the tryouts," said Wright. "It not only brought together kids in the Triangle area, but from way beyond those boundaries, so it really is the best of the best. I’m confident that all of our teams are going to be strong.
