Community: Staying Busy in the Offseason

It is hard to believe that nearly two months have come and gone since the last Hurricanes game of the 2011-2012 season. Regardless of our nostalgia, we have continued to stay busy within the community during that time.

Canes for a Cure Komen Team: We have 44 members on our team and have raised $4,365 to date! The race is on June 9, and we are on the homestretch!

I am announcing an incentive that runs Thursday, May 24 through Thursday, June 7. If you join and raise an additional $100 OR recruit four new members for the Canes for a Cure Komen team, you will be entered to win a complete set of autographed Holiday Pucks! Register here today.

We are also excited to announce that Eye Care Associates Storm Squad members are joining our team! We invite you to walk with us along with Amanda, Brooke, Catherine, Carrie, Kim, Victoria and Mike as we Race for the Cure!

Pick Up a Book and Read: Wednesday marked the end of the 2011-2012 program. We held recognition assemblies at Penny Road Elementary on April 26, Davis Drive Elementary on Tuesday and Leesville Elementary on Wednesday. The assemblies were earned by the top three schools whose students read the most pages combined during the program.

Not only were those students recognized with an assembly, the winners of the PUBAR Essay Contest were joined by Stormy and Carolina Hurricanes Captain Eric Staal for a pizza luncheon at PNC Arena. With over 4.4 million pages read, we impacted over 3,000 North Carolina elementary school students and cannot wait for next year’s program. Make sure to check out the video from the Davis Drive assembly to see Stormy do the worm in front of a group of fifth graders! For more information and the results of this year’s program, click on the Pick Up a Book and Read link under the Community tab.

Kids ‘N Community Foundation Grant Visits: The Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated $280,447 to 26 non-profit children’s charities in North Carolina during its Spring 2012 grant cycle.

On May 4, Stormy and members of the Carolina Hurricanes staff visited Triangle Family Services, which received $15,000 this grant cycle. TFS has focused on serving families and individuals by providing them the programs they need to create a more stable environment for each family. On May 15, the gang visited the Daniel Center in Raleigh, an after-school and summer/track-out program whose mission is to narrow the education gap for children ages 5-12 who are at-risk and economically disadvantaged. The Daniel Center received just over $13,000 from the Foundation to fund two scholarships for one complete year. There will be several more grant recipient visits this summer!

NHL Online Auction: We launched an online auction Wednesday featuring 11 items including an autographed, game-worn Ray Whitney #13 Carolina Hurricanes jersey, a game-used Josef Vasicek Carolina Hurricanes glove and a game-worn Cory Stillman #61 Carolina Hurricanes jersey, just to name a few. All of the proceeds go to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Place your bid now!

Make sure to stay tuned with all of the Hurricanes events that are happening this summer!
