I’ve received a lot of questions about current and former players’ items at the Kids ‘N Community Foundation In-Game Silent Auction Booth (Section 129 for those of you who have not yet visited) like Will you ever auction off another Erik Cole Jersey? Is there going to be another Cam Ward
Goalie Mask up for auction this year? etc. Well, I finally have an answer for all of you. I’m excited to announce that the Carolina Hurricanes’ NHL Online Auction officially launched this morning at 7:00am.
This week, our NHL Online Auction features three unique autographed items. One of the most unique items is the autographed, framed 8x10 photo of Hurricanes’ All-Star Eric Staal
and President/GM Jim Rutherford. The photo captures Jim Rutherford passing a Limited Edition Carolina Hurricanes Pen to Eric Staal
during the initial press conference where they both signed the agreed upon ten year $57.75 million contract on September 11, 2008. The pen, which is included in the auction, was also used to sign the final contract after NHL revisions on September 16th. The pen comes with a wooden display box.
In the auction, you will also find an autographed, game-worn Andrew Ladd Carolina Hurricanes helmet. Ladd was an integral part in clenching the 2006 Stanley Cup. The Carolina Hurricanes’ 2004 NHL first round draft pick is now with the Chicago Blackhawks where he has registered 9 goals and 18 assists (27 points) so far this season.
Ladd’s former 2006 Stanley Cup teammate and current Edmonton Oiler, Erik Cole, is also featured in our auction this week. The autographed 2006 Official Game Seven Stanley Cup Puck with Erik Cole’s autograph commemorates the Stanley Cup Championship the Carolina Hurricanes won in 2006.

As an added bonus, all of our Online Auction proceeds benefit the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.
Make sure that you continue to check in with our online auction. We will feature some exciting new items this year. One exclusive item that we will be launching in the next week is NASCAR driver Regan Smith’s Carolina Hurricanes themed racing helmet. Smith wore the helmet during the Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on October 11, 2008 in Charlotte. He is a big ‘Canes fan and wore the helmet to raise awareness for the upcoming NHL season, and shortly after, he donated the helmet to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation to use as an auction item (for which we are so grateful!). In addition to Regan Smith’s autograph, the helmet is also signed by fellow NASCAR drivers Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Bobby Labonte, Aric Almirola, Martin Truex Jr., Jamie McMurray, and Elliot Sadler.
Smith was the 2008 Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year. I don’t know much about NASCAR, but the fact that Smith was the first Sprint Cup Rookie to finish all (34) races that he started seems like an amazing feat. I know that I wouldn’t be able to drive like that and not have some car malfunction or race ending wreck on the track. Last year, Smith raced for Dale Earnhardt, Inc., but it was recently announced that he will now be driving the No. 78 Hendrick-powered Chevrolet Impala SS for Furniture Row Racing out of Colorado. He is slated to race in 12 Sprint Cup races this year including the revered Daytona 500 on February 15th.
While the helmet is up for auction, we will display it at the Kids ‘N Community Foundation Silent Auction at section 129. Come by and take a look. I’ve never seen a NASCAR helmet up close, and I have to say (in the simplest of terms) that it is very, very cool. Similar to the way that hockey goalies decorate their helmets with various themes, so do NASCAR drivers. So, it is very unique and special to have a Hurricanes themed helmet. The helmet will only be up for auction online, and it will run through the Daytona 500. Keep an eye out for more details on the launch of the helmet.
