Community: A Fun-Filled July Weekend

The weekend of July 20-22 was nothing short of fun- and fan-filled at PNC Arena.

Friday, July 20 marked the Hurricanes Fifth Annual Summer Fun Fest. For the first time, this event was held indoors, and the Kids ‘N Community Foundation kiosk was set up just inside the entrance. The KNCF table remained busy all night, with holiday mystery pucks and authentic jerseys for sale, our Mystery Magnet Pick-Up and a school supply drive.

Fans enthusiastically approached the school supply bins to drop off bags of crayons, notebooks, pens, pencils and more to benefit the Wake County Boys and Girls Clubs. More excitement followed when given a chance to enter to win a 2011-2012 team signed jersey in exchange for their donation. The bins started to overflow due to the high number of donations and had to be emptied several times throughout the night. This was the Canes’ first ever school supply drive, and we are ecstatic with the amount of support our great fans showed. Over 3,500 school supplies were collected and were given to the Wake County Boys and Girls Clubs on Friday, July 27 at a Hurricanes Staff Community Day.

The Mystery Magnet Pick-Up was a highlight of the KNCF kiosk. Fans had a chance to purchase a magnet for $20 and receive the current or former Hurricanes player-signed item that was written on the back. As soon as the doors opened, fans dashed in line, crossing their fingers that they would pick up a magnet revealing their favorite player’s item. All 30 magnets sold out in the first 20 minutes of the event.

Holiday mystery pucks were also available for purchase at the kiosk. Each holiday puck was signed by a Hurricanes player and individually wrapped. Fans were able to buy the pucks for $30 each but were not able to find out which player signed it until after purchase. On the opposite end of the kiosk were former Carolina Hurricanes players’ authentic jerseys for sale. One fan found an authentic black Hurricanes alternate jersey of a player with his same last name and decided he could not leave without it.

The Foundation raised $2,755 through the magnets, pucks and jerseys. A total of 4,000 fans attended the event! This year’s Summer Fun Fest was incredibly successful with the huge turn-out of Caniac friends and families in this offseason event. We want to thank our fans for their support at our school supply drive and kiosk. We could not have been successful without you!

Two days later on Sunday, July 22, nine Hurricanes staffers geared up in wheelchairs on the arena floor to face off against the North Carolina Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association’s Carolina Fury. Around 250 friends and supporters attended to watch three 20-minute periods in the sixth rematch between the two teams.

The Foundation hosted a silent auction and the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad collected donations to benefit the NCEWHA. Some items included a team signed stick and a puck signed by Cam Ward. The silent auction and donations collected $752.50 for the NCEWHA.

Though the game was close in the beginning, the Fury pulled away and won with a final score of 10-2. Members of the Fury got the chance to compete against former Carolina Hurricanes players Jesse Boulerice and Shane Willis. The event was a great opportunity for the Fury teammates to come out on the Hurricanes’ arena floor and show off their skills to friends and family.

With the many opportunities to interact with our fans, July was an exciting month for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. We would like to thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you all throughout the upcoming season!
