RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Southeast Division Champion Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has named center Ron Francis team captain. Francis becomes the 12th captain in the NHL history of the franchise and will serve along with alternates Gary Roberts and Glen Wesley during the 1999-2000 NHL season. Francis replaces teammate Keith Primeau who was named the team's captain on October 3, 1998.
"Our team is fortunate to have several captain type individuals on our roster," stated Rutherford. "Ron is certainly one of those players and we are confident that his experience will have a positive impact on our team."
It marks the second time in team history that Francis has been captain. Francis was first named captain on February 22, 1985 following the team's acquisition of Mike Liut and future considerations (Jorgen Pettersson) from St. Louis for Greg Millen and team captain Mark Johnson. He served as the team's captain until he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1990-91 season. Francis also served as captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1997-98 season following the retirement of Mario Lemieux.
Francis is the Hurricanes' franchise all-time leader in games played (796), goals (285), assists (588), points (873), hat tricks (9), game-winning goals (42), and power-play goals (91). The Sault Ste. Marie native ranks eighth in league history in points (1,486) and seventh in assists (1,037). Carolina hosts the New Jersey Devils in their first home game of the 1999-2000 regular season at the new Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena on October 29, 1999.
