RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 21, 2002) -- In a strategic relationship with Verrus Mobile Technologies, Inc. and AT&T Wireless, the Carolina Hurricanes today announce a plan to increase the fans' total game experience through the use of wireless technology.

The Hurricanes are working with Verrus, a Vancouver, B.C, company who specializes in mobile device software applications. Together they developed a wireless Interactive Sports Entertainment gaming package for Hurricanes fans to enjoy. Through this interactive gaming, fans will have three options to choose from - SlapShot and FaceOff games, and Wireless Most Valuable Player (WMVP) voting.

SlapShot lets fans predict how their three favorite players will perform, guessing whether they'll score a goal, get an assist or rack up penalty minutes. FaceOff lets fans try their hands at Hurricanes trivia during the game and intermissions. Participants are awarded points based on performance and compete for recognition each night. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their WMVP with their Internet-ready phone near the conclusion of the game.

"We have actively pursued the wireless space over the past year, and knew the timing was right to launch some exciting interactive wireless games to truly become 'The Home of Wireless Hockey,' " said Howard Sadel, Director of New Media and Graphic Communications for the Hurricanes and the Entertainment & Sports Arena. "Our goal is to increase our fans total game experience in the arena."

Fifty Internet-ready phones with AT&T Wireless PocketNet® service and free local call capability are available free-of-charge at the ESA for fans to borrow during games if they do not already have one. A simple registration process and proper identification is all that is required for fans to begin playing.

"We are excited about our relationship with the Carolina Hurricanes in their efforts to be the first to offer this technology to National Hockey League fans," said Mike Holland, AT&T Wireless market director for North Carolina. "This is just one example of how AT&T Wireless is providing our customers with tomorrow's advanced wireless service today."

Desmond Griffin, president of Verrus, added, "For years, fans have been guessing the outcome of hockey games, discussing team trivia, and voicing their opinion of which players are performing well. We are providing a forum for this pastime where, in addition to bragging rights, fans can be recognized and earn a spot on the big screen scoreboard."
