RALEIGH, NC (October 6, 2000) – Ken Lehner, Vice President of Marketing Communications for the National Hockey League Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the lineup for the 2000-01 Hurricanes Radio Network. WRBZ-850 The Buzz, a sports talk station based in Raleigh, will begin its third season as the Hurricanes’ flagship station after signing a new two-year contract. The Buzz will head the radio network that includes 10 returning station affiliates and three new affiliates.

WCHL-AM 1360 in Chapel Hill, WDNC-AM 620 in Durham and WMFR-AM 1230 in High Point have joined the Hurricanes Radio Network for the 2000-01 season. The Hurricanes radio network also includes stations in Fayetteville, Graham, Greenville, Jacksonville, Mufreesboro, Rocky Mount, Southern Pines, Wilmington, Winston-Salem and La Grange, GA.

“We are excited about the addition of three new stations to our radio network,” Lehner said. “The Hurricanes Radio Network has more than doubled in size over the course of the past two seasons as we continue to expand our hockey footprint throughout North Carolina.”

Chuck Kaiton returns as the play-by-play announcer for the team’s radio network, a position he has held since the organization joined the National Hockey League in the 1979-80 season. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Kaiton has served as President of the NHL Broadcasters Association for the past 14 seasons (1986-2000).

The Carolina Hurricanes open the regular season on Saturday, October 7, as the Hurricanes take on the Washington Capitals at the Entertainment and Sports Arena at 7:00 p.m. The night will feature a pre-game Tailgate Party, a light show, and a magnetic schedule giveaway. Parking lots open at 4:30 p.m. with the Tailgate Party set to begin at 5:00 p.m. Doors to the arena open at 5:30, and the pre-game show starts at 6:40 p.m. The Hurricanes head into their regular season opener after winning their final three exhibition games in impressive style, defeating their opponents by a combined score of 14-6 in the three games.
