RALEIGH, NC (July 11, 2000) - Jim Rutherford, CEO and General Manager of the National Hockey League Carolina Hurricanes, today released the team’s schedule for the 2001-02 regular season. Carolina will open the franchise’s fifth season in North Carolina, and 23rd in the NHL, on Friday Oct. 5, 2001 against the New York Rangers at the Entertainment and Sports Arena starting at 7 p.m.
For the second consecutive season, the Hurricanes will begin all weeknight home games at 7 p.m. Seven of Carolina’s eight Sunday home games will begin at 1:30 p.m., with the Jan. 6 home contest with Philadelphia starting at 5 p.m. Carolina will play 17 of its 41 home games on the weekend.
Breaking the home schedule down by day, the Hurricanes will play four games on Monday night, nine games on Tuesday night, seven games on Wednesday night, four games on Thursday night, seven games on Friday night, two games on Saturday and eight games on Sunday. Overall, Carolina will play seven games on Monday, 15 on Tuesday, 11 on Wednesday, 13 on Thursday, 11 on Friday, 13 on Saturday and 12 on Sunday.
In terms of opponents, Carolina will play its Southeast Division foes five times each with three home games against Atlanta and Florida. Carolina will split home dates with teams in the Atlantic and Northeast Divisions. Carolina will face a majority of the teams from the Western Conference twice. The Hurricanes will not play host to Colorado, St. Louis, Anaheim and Chicago, and will not travel to Phoenix, Columbus, Nashville and Calgary.
The NHL will take a 12-day break from Feb. 14-25, 2002 for the Winter Olympics. The All-Star break will take place Feb. 1-3, with the All-Star Game taking place Feb. 3 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The Hurricanes will start training camp on Sept. 11 in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Hurricanes will practice from Sept. 12-19 at TECO Arena in Ft. Myers before returning to the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena for the remainder of camp. The Hurricanes will play two preseason games in Raleigh: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Atlanta and Friday, Sept. 28 vs. Washington.
