WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Carolina Hurricanes seek their first three-game winning streak of the season tonight when they battle the Washington Capitals in a Southeast Division matchup. The Hurricanes are coming off Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators as Bates Battaglia and Robert Kron scored and Arturs Irbe stopped 29 shots.
Battaglia's goal was his seventh of the campaign, tying his total in 60 games last season.
Right wing Sami Kapanen leads the Hurricanes in scoring with nine goals and 11 assists, and also has a plus-11 rating. However, he has not registered a goal in Carolina's last five contests.
Despite wins in two straight starts, Irbe has been streaky throughout the season. He has posted a 6-5-3 record with a 2.35 goals-against average.
Washington looks to extend its unbeaten streak to three games, after Wednesday's 2-2 tie against Dallas.
After recording only one goal in his first 16 games, Richard Zednik scored twice Wednesday, including the equalizer midway through the third. Coach Ron Wilson said Zednik's outburst could have resulted in the forward going back to his old sticks.
Right wing Peter Bondra leads the Capitals with 10 goals. His 13 points is tied with Jan Bulis and Steve Konowalchuk for the team lead.
The Capitals have played very well at home lately, winning four of the last six games at the MCI Center. They are 2-1-1 on their current five-game homestand.
Carolina won the first meeting of the season, 3-2 in Raleigh on November 7.
