RALEIGH, NC - The National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes will host their Military Appreciation Day presented by celito on Sunday, Jan. 13, when the team welcomes the Nashville Predators to PNC Arena. Military Appreciation Day will honor both servicemen and women for their service and commitment to our country, as well as raise awareness about the branches of the military.
The Hurricanes will wear special jerseys honoring the military during pregame warm-ups. Jerseys worn by Jaccob Slavin, Justin Faulk and Trevor van Riemsdyk will be auctioned off by the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation during the game and presented to the winning bidders by the players in a postgame meet and greet. The remaining jerseys will be auctioned off online, with all proceeds benefiting the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation.
New for this season, Hurricanes players will be wearing the logo of the 18th Airborne Corps on their helmets during Sunday's game. Players, coaches, and front office staff will each receive a short bio and photo of a soldier from the 18th Airborne Corps who is stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. but currently serving overseas, in order to put faces to the names of servicemen and women who protect us.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, fans can enjoy a special display of active and retired military vehicles on the PNC Arena South Plaza, including UH-72 Lakota helicopter.
SFC Mari Koontz will perform the national anthem, while the presentation of colors will be made by the National Guard Youth Challenge Program. There will be a ceremonial puck drop featuring SPC Devin Pruett and his Military Working Dog, Helen, a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois. The Fort Bragg 82nd Airborne Division's All-American Chorus will perform during each intermission and, in addition, various active and reserve members of the military will be recognized and honored throughout the game.
Coinciding with this year's Military Appreciation Game, the Hurricanes are hosting a Military Appreciation Drive through Sunday, Jan. 13. Donations of granola bars, chewing gum or beef jerky will be accepted at the VIP entrance of PNC Arena during normal business hours and at all entrances on Jan. 11 and Jan. 13 game days. Fans who donate one of the above items will be entered for a chance to win select prizes. All donations benefit the USO of North Carolina.
The following companies helped sponsor tickets for Sunday's game that were provided to members of the military and their families: celito, Cree Inc., K2 Solutions, RTI International, Pepsi Bottling Ventures, Vector Security Inc., Securboration and Jim and Sandy Hamm.
