New for 2012, Summer Fun Fest will move inside PNC Arena with activities spread across the arena floor and the first level. While the ice will not be down, fans will be able to take pictures on the Hurricanes’ bench, in the penalty box, with the Olympia ice resurfacers and more. In addition, the team’s championship banners and the retired jerseys of Ron Francis, Glen Wesley and Rod Brind’Amour will be lowered from the rafters so fans can take their pictures with them.
The highlight of Summer Fun Fest will come at 7:30 p.m. when television play-by-play voice John Forslund hosts State of the Hurricanes. President and General Manager Jim Rutherford, forward Chad LaRose and Canes alumni Aaron Ward and Jesse Boulerice will join Forslund for one-on-one interviews. The hour-long State of the Hurricanes will be broadcast live on the team’s flagship station, 99.9 FM The Fan. Joining Forslund to help kick off the address will be Mike Maniscalco of The Fan.
At 8:30 p.m., fans will enjoy videos chronicling the Hurricanes’ history from the late 1990s, and highlighting the playoff runs of 2002, 2006 and 2009, as well as the 2011 NHL All-Star Game. The video includes some classic CanesVision features such as “Ask The Canes,” and will conclude with a highlight package that looks ahead to the 2012-13 season.
As part of Summer Fun Fest, fans can enjoy live music from DJ George, more than 20 interactive inflatables and games, giveaways, appearances by Stormy and the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad, discounted concessions, street hockey and hockey games and extended hours for The Eye. The event also serves as fans’ first chance to view available seat locations for the 2012-13 full-season and 26-game ticket packages.
Fans also are invited to take part in a School Supply Charity Drive during the event to benefit the Wake County Boys & Girls Clubs. Supplies can be brought to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation kiosk inside the East Priority Lounge during the event. Items can include pencils, pens, notebook paper, spiral notebooks and crayons. Fans that choose to bring an item will be entered to win a 2011-12 team-signed replica jersey.
The Kids ‘N Community Foundation also will have Hurricanes Mystery Magnets available for a $20 donation. On the back of each magnet is a prize of an autographed puck, player photo or a replica stick signed by former and current Canes players. Come early, as there are a limited number of magnets available. Magnets will go on sale at 5:30 p.m.
