'CANES SCORE 3-2 KNOCKOUT IN ROUND TWO WITH RANGERS

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes reclaimed the two points they dropped in Raleigh on Monday with a 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Hurricanes went into the locker room down 1-0 after the first period. New York defenseman Rich Pilon scored his first goal since Feb. 23, 1997 when he beat Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe five-hole.

At 5:53 of the second period, rookie defenseman Niclas Wallin began the Carolina scoring attack. Wallin received a Sandis Ozolinsh pass and beat Rangers' goaltender Mike Richter glove side. The goal was Wallin's second of the season and second of his NHL career.

Just 29 seconds after Wallin tied the game 1-1, 20-year old defenseman David Tanabe found the net against Richter. Center Rod Brind'Amour and winger Shane Willis earned assists on the goal, Tanabe's second of the season and sixth of his career.

Hurricanes forward Martin Gelinas scored the game-winner and closed the Carolina scoring at the 14:13 of the second period. Brind'Amour forced a turnover and found Gelinas posed to strike against Richter. The goal was Gelinas' 16th this season. Gelinas found the net just 14 times in the 81 games for the Hurricanes last season.

The Rangers' Brad Smyth scored his first goal of the season at 2:49 of the third period to bring New York within one, but Carolina held on for the victory.

The Hurricanes return home tonight to prepare for Saturday's 1:30 match-up with the Philadelphia Flyers at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
