'CANES FALL IN OVERTIME, GET POINT AT DETROIT

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

DETROIT (FEB. 14, 2001) -- The Carolina Hurricanes went to overtime with the Detroit Red Wings to earn a point in the standings but fell to Detroit when Sergei Fedorov found the net on a one-timer at 2:51 of the extra session.

The Hurricanes took a 3-0 lead on Detroit at 10:50 of the second period when defenseman Kevin Hatcher re-directed a Glen Wesley backhanded shot into the net. The assist was Wesley's third point of the night and Hatcher's third goal of the season.

The Red Wings struck back with two second-period goals of their own from Fedorov and Martin Lapointe at 13:21 and 15:35. Fedorov finished the game with two goals and an assist on Lapointe's tally to earn first star honors.

Early in the game, Hurricanes winger Bates Battaglia registered his first goal since Dec. 31 during a two-minute interference penalty to Red Wings defenseman Todd Gill. Wesley let a slapshot fly from the top of the slot that rebounded off Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood to Rod Brind'Amour who found Battaglia for the goal.

Brind'Amour's assist on Battaglia's goal was the first of three for the centerman on the night, a mark that earned him second star honors. Brind'Amour has scored points in 11 of the last 12 games (1/18-2/14: 4g, 13a).

The Hurricanes took 40 shots on goal, their second-highest total of the season. The season-high mark of 42 was set Nov. 29 at Florida.

"When you get 40 shots on goal in Detroit, you played a pretty good game," said Wesley. "We played really well most of the game. A couple of breakdowns hurt us. It's good to get a point but it's a game we should have won."

Wesley beat Osgood at 1:49 of the second period with a slapshot from the top of the right faceoff circle. The goal was Wesley's fourth of the season.

The loss extends the Hurricanes winless streak at Joe Louis Arena to 11 games in the last ten seasons that the teams have played. Carolina posts a 23-25-7-1 all-time record against Detroit, its second best mark against one of the original six National Hockey League franchises.

NOTES: Carolina went 3-4 on the power play against Detroit's league-leading penalty kill… Hurricanes goaltender Arturs Irbe turned away 31 of 35 Red Wings shots on goal... Inclement weather in the Detroit area forced a postponement of the Hurricanes' post-game flight. Instead, the team will return to Raleigh tomorrow following practice in Detroit at 10 a.m… The inclement weather may have kept some Red Wings ticketholders from making it to the game. Still, a sell-out crowd of 19,995 was announced.
