'Canes Celebrate One Year Championship Anniversary

by Mari Jeter / Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, NC - To many Triangle residents, it seems like only yesterday that the Carolina Hurricanes brought North Carolina it’s first ever professional championship. The truth is, a year has past since the ‘Canes won the historic game 7 in the RBC Center on June 19, 2006.

To celebrate, the Hurricanes promotions and fan development department hosted a Game 7 viewing party at the Carolina Ale House Cary location, complete with a guest appearance by Cam Ward, the starting goaltender for the 2006 championship team and playoffs MVP.

“The turnout at the Carolina Ale House was incredible as our fans came out in full force.  Our team has great support and this event was no different,” said Jon Chase, manager of the promotions and fan development department.  “The atmosphere was great and brought back some great memories from last years exciting run to the Championship.”

The Hurricanes brought members of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Storm Squad, Stormy, an inflatable slap shot booth, and Ron the Ref, who emceed the event. Radio personalities Salt and Demetri the Greek from local station 96 Rock were also on hand to broadcast a live feed for parts of the game. While that seems like enough to keep fans entertained, the promotions and fan development department also raffled off prizes, including an entire team-signed jersey, during every scheduled time-out.

“In addition to putting this event on for our fans, it is also a huge benefit to the Kids N' Community foundation.  In a matter of hours we raised over $1,200, which will go towards the great programs that the foundation supports,” said Chase. “So not only did we relive a great moment in our franchise’s history but our fans were able to help a great cause as well.”

Judging by the crowd’s reaction, the highlight of the night was without a doubt the presence of Ward.  Ward, who signed a three-year contract with Carolina in May, stayed not only to relive the magic, but also posed for photos and signed autographs for more than a few lucky fans.

If you missed the event, the entire Game 7 broadcast plus highlights from the 2005-2006 regular season, playoffs and the finals can be found on the Carolina Hurricanes 2006 Stanley Cup Champions DVD, available at www.shop.nhl.com.
