RALEIGH, NC -The Carolina Hurricanes today announced that the team has assigned defensemen Hadyn Fleury and Roland McKeown and forwards Valentin Zykov and Nicolas Roy to the American Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers. Charlotte tonight clinched a spot in the 2018 Calder Cup playoffs, which will begin the week of April 20.

Fleury, 21, completed his first NHL season in 2017-18, totaling eight points (0g, 8a) and 14 penalty minutes in 67 games. The Carlyle, Sask., native ranks seventh among NHL rookie defensemen in games played, and has also appeared in one game on the AHL level with the Checkers. Carolina's first-round selection, seventh overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft, Fleury led Charlotte defensemen with seven goals and tied a team record with a plus-16 rating during his first professional season with Charlotte last year.
McKeown, 22, has earned three assists in 10 games with the Hurricanes this season. The Listowel, Ont., native made his NHL debut on Nov. 4 at Arizona and earned his first NHL points with two assists against Florida on Nov. 7. McKeown currently ranks tied for second in the AHL in plus/minus (+35), and has totaled 23 points (7g, 16a) in 63 games for Charlotte this season. A second-round selection (50th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2014 NHL Draft, McKeown (6'1", 195 lbs.) has totaled 35 points (8g, 27a) in 138 career AHL games for Charlotte. He was acquired by the Hurricanes from the Kings on Feb. 25, 2015, along with a first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (Julien Gauthier) in exchange for Andrej Sekera.
Zykov, 22, scored three goals, tallied four assists (7 points) and was plus-5 in 10 NHL games for the Hurricanes this season. The St. Petersburg, Russia, native has appeared in 12 career NHL games for Carolina, totaling eight points (4g, 4a). Zykov currently leads the AHL in goals (32) and power-play goals (16) in 61 games for the Checkers, and has totaled 100 points (55g, 45a) in 172 career AHL games. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round, 37th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft and was acquired by the Hurricanes in exchange for Kris Versteeg on Feb. 28, 2016.
Roy, 21, made his NHL debut in the Hurricanes' victory on Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Amos, Que., native has registered 37 points (10g, 27a) in 68 games with the Checkers this season, including a career-high four points (1g, 3a) against Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. Roy ranks tied for fourth among Charlotte skaters in assists this season and tied for eighth among AHL rookies in assists. The Amos, Quebec, native was drafted by the Hurricanes in the fourth round, 96th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft.
