Canes Agree to Terms with Justin Shugg
by Terrell Williams / Carolina HurricanesShugg, 22, completed his third professional season in 2013-14, spending the entire season with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Niagara Falls, Ont., native established AHL career highs in games played (75), goals (16), assists (22) and points (38), ranking tied for fourth on the team in goals.
Selected by the Hurricanes in the fourth round, 105th overall, of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Shugg (5’11”, 185 lbs.) has totaled 28 goals and 44 assists (72 points) in 147 career AHL games with Charlotte. He has also played 15 regular-season and 11 playoff games on the ECHL level with Florida, helping the Everblades capture their first Kelly Cup as ECHL champions in 2012. Prior to turning professional, Shugg spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Oshawa, Windsor and St. Michael’s, helping Windsor win back-to-back Memorial Cup championships in 2009 and 2010 and reaching the Memorial Cup championship game with St. Michael’s in 2011.
