RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the Hurricanes have acquired defenseman Andrew Hutchinson from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Phoenix's third-round pick (78th overall) in Saturday’s NHL Entry Draft.

“Andrew adds depth to our team’s defense,” said Rutherford. “He’s a skilled and mobile defenseman whose production has increased steadily since turning pro.”

Hutchinson, 25, played all of 2004-05 with the Milwaukee Admirals, Nashville’s American Hockey League affiliate. In 76 games, the Evanston, IL, native scored 10 goals and earned 35 assists (45 points), setting new AHL career highs for games played, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes (79), and ranking second among Admirals defensemen in scoring. In Milwaukee’s seven postseason games, he notched a goal and three assists (4 points) to help the Admirals to the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs.

During the 2003-04 season, Hutchinson (6’ 2”, 198 lbs.) made his NHL debut, playing in 18 games with the Predators, notching four goals and four assists (8 points). Also during 2003-04, Hutchinson played in 46 AHL games with Milwaukee, scoring 12 goals and earning 12 assists (24 points) during the regular season. During the Admirals’ run to the 2004 Calder Cup championship, Hutchison played in each of Milwaukee’s 22 games, scoring five goals and earning 11 assists (16 points). His 16 points during the 2004 AHL postseason ranked him first among Milwaukee defensemen and fourth on the team in scoring.

Hutchinson turned professional in 2002 following his senior season at Michigan State of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, where he was named a second-team All-American in 2001-02.
