Boychuk Joins River Rats

by Paul Branecky / Carolina Hurricanes
Update: Boychuk picked up his first professional point with an assist in Albany's 4-2 loss on Friday night.  Brandon Sutter, his buddy from the Canadian national team program, assisted on the same Ryan Weston goal for his 11th point in 21 AHL games this season.

With his junior season now over, Zach Boychuk has joined Albany of the AHL for their road game against the Wikes Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight.  Albany has two regular season games remaining, the other being tomorrow night against Binghamton.

Boychuk's Lethbridge Hurricanes, the Eastern Conference's seventh seed, were swept in their second round series against the top-ranked Calgary Hitmen, clearing the way for him to join the River Rats.  Boychuk had 13 points (6g, 7a) to rank tied for fifth in WHL playoff scoring through games of April 9.

As Albany will not qualify for the playoffs, Boychuk will get to play only two games for the Rats this season.  Although it will mark the talented former first-round pick's AHL debut, he actually made his professional debut with Carolina earlier this season, going scoreless in two games.
