Best of John Forslund's AMA

by Michael Smith / Carolina Hurricanes
Have you ever wanted to ask Carolina Hurricanes television play-by-play man anything? Users on the popular social networking site Reddit got to do just that on Tuesday night, as Forslund hosted an AMA (“ask me anything”) segment in the hockey subreddit.

For those not familiar with Reddit or those simply looking for the highlights, we’ve compiled the best of what Forslund had to offer in his AMA, the full version of which can be seen here.

Editor’s note: some questions and answers have been either condensed or corrected for grammar.

What’s the general mindset and culture been like since the change from Jim Rutherford to Ron Francis?
Ron is totally committed to drafting and developing.

Do you have any one goal call that stands out to you as your most memorable?
Jussi Jokinen beats the clock in 2009.

How much personal interaction time do you usually get with the guys? Also who would you say was the most fun player to hang out with on trips over your career?
Nic Wallin, Erik Cole and Jeff O'Neill. I try to stay separated though and earn their respect.

What kind of things do you do to prep for a game?
You have to figure out your own system. Remember every player in the game has a story. Cover it all.

What time do you guys go to bed at night and how early do you have to get up?
I go to bed when the last game has been played, and I get up every day at 5:30-5:45.

Wow! Please tell me you at least get naps in when you can...
Sleep is overrated lol

What's the biggest mistake you've ever made during a play-by-play on live TV?
Every mistake is big. I have made plenty. In this business you’re not supposed to make them.

Who have you had the most fun working with in your awesome career?
All have been great honestly. My first game ever was with Emile Francis at MSG. That was like walking into the building with a combo of Gandhi and Elvis.

How much fun do you and Tripp have when calling the games?
More than you can imagine.

I was just wondering if you have any advice for becoming a broadcaster? It's always been my dream.
Go for it. Never give up. Be yourself, not someone else. They have already done it.

What arenas have the best and worst booths for announcers?
Best: Montreal. Worst for me: Florida. Too far [from the ice].

Which arena has the best food?
Never eat at the rink. I eat breakfast and don't eat again until the game is over.

How well do you think last year’s draft are faring in the NHL so far?
Very well. We are lucky to have a few generational players.

Ever since you've been involved, what year has been your favorite year of hockey?
1990, 1991, 2006. All championships.

Do you think Raleigh will ever host an outdoor game?
I hope so. Let’s win the Cup again first.

I'm curious to know about your thoughts and perspectives on the state of hockey in North Carolina. … What have been some of your best experiences with watching the hockey community there grow?
The greatest reward I have had is helping hockey grow in NC in some way.
