RALEIGH, NC—Paul Strand, Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the Bantam Jr. Hurricanes AAA won the Bauer Division of the Nike/Bauer Tournament held in Chicago from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. The team, coached by former professional goaltender Richard Shulmistra, went 6-0-1 in the tournament and defeated the Chicago Young Americans 6-3 in the final game. Junior Hurricanes player Wyatt Sexton was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and goaltender Sean Romeo was named the tournament’s best goaltender.
This marks the first time a North Carolina-based team has won the prestigious Nike/Bauer Tournament – the largest youth tournament in the United States. The annual tournament attracts the top 40 ranked teams from the United States, Canada, Russia and other European countries. All three Jr. Hurricanes teams – Pee-wee, Bantam and Under-16 – made it to the final day of the tournament and the playoffs, posting a combined 11-3-3 record.
