RALEIGH, NC – Jon Chase, Director of Community Relations and Promotions for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced details for the team’s 2011 NHL Awards Viewing Party at Buffalo Brothers Restaurant & Bar on Lake Boone Trail on Wednesday, June 22. The event will begin at 6 p.m., with Versus’ television coverage beginning at 7 p.m. Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner is one of three finalists for the 2011 Calder Trophy, which honors the NHL’s top rookie.
The Awards Party will feature appearances by Hurricanes radio voice Chuck Kaiton, Stormy, the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad and Ron the Ref, as well as games, raffles and contests. Fans will also have the opportunity to take their pictures on the “red carpet” with members of the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad.
Update: Tom Barrasso, Hurricanes assistant coach and recipient of the 1984 Calder Trophy and Vezina Trophy, will be in attendance from 6:15-7:00 p.m. Barrasso will offer insight on his experience in 1984 and also talk hockey with Chuck Kaiton.
Also, Bob the Blade from 96rock will be on hand from 5-8 p.m.
The 2011 NHL Awards will be held at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, and the other finalists for the Calder Trophy are San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture and New York Islanders forward Michael Grabner. Skinner completed his first NHL season in 2010-11, and ranked first among league rookies in points (63), second in assists (32) and third in goals (31). The Markham, Ont., native was tied for second among NHL rookies in power-play assists (12) and power-play points (18), and trailed only Eric Staal among Hurricanes skaters in goals and points. Skinner (5’11”, 193 lbs.) scored his 30th goal on April 6 against Detroit, becoming the youngest player in franchise history and the seventh-youngest player in NHL history to score 30 goals (18 years, 325 days).
