– The National Hockey League today announced that Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera
has been named the league’s Third Star for the week ending Jan. 26.
Sekera, 27, totaled six points (1g, 5a) and a plus-8 rating last week in Carolina’s victories against the Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators. After notching an assist and a plus-2 rating in Philadelphia, Sekera netted the game-winning goal and had two helpers on Thursday against his former team in Buffalo. He was named first star for the second consecutive game on Saturday, earning a pair of assists in the Hurricanes’ win against the Senators.
Sekera (6’0”, 201 lbs.) ranks tied for ninth among NHL defensemen in goals (8) and tied for 14th in points (30). He is third among all Hurricanes skaters in points and plus/minus (+6) this season. A native of Bojnice, Slovakia, Sekera will represent his home country during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
