The Vegas Golden Knights fell short in the first game of the rookie tournament on Friday night at Gila River Arena.

COYOTES 5, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2
Arizona's rookie team opened the scoring halfway through the first frame at the end of their power play to give them the 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, the Golden Knights killed off a penalty with the help of some exceptional saves by Jiri Patera. Shortly after the penalty kill, Golden Knights 2021 first-round pick Zach Dean forced a turnover in the offensive zone and buried a backhander to tie the game, 1-1. The Golden Knights applied pressure the final few minutes of the period but didn't find the back of the net. The score at the end of the first period was one a piece. With 6:50 remaining in the second, 2021 ninth overall pick, Dylan Guenther, scored for Arizona to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead. The Coyotes then capitalized on an early third period powerplay to extend their lead to 3-1. Guenther scored on the powerplay and registered his second goal of the night later in the frame extending Arizona's lead, 4-1. Two minutes later, Arizona took advantage of a turnover in the neutral zone on the penalty kill and scored to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Later in the period, Lynden McCallum scored to close the gap 5-2 before the horn sounded to end the game.
The Golden Knights play their next game of the tournament Sunday, 2 p.m. PT at Scottsdale Ice Den vs. the San Jose Sharks.
