#VegasGoesGold Winners Announced

Local schools were invited to enter a contest to show their team spirit earlier this month

by Dan Marrazza @GoldenKnights /

It was a test to show team spirit.

Leading into the Golden Knights' home opener against the Arizona Coyotes on October 10, local students were encouraged to show their pride in the team and tweet their photos using the #VegasGoesGold hash tag.

The photos would then be judged based on originality, with first place, second place and a third place winner being selected,

First place, submitted by Sara Polito at Kay Carl Elementary School, has won a visit from a Golden Knights player and the team's mascot, Chance, as well as a banner for their classroom.

Second place, Michael Sarabyn's eighth grade health class at Roy Martin Middle School, wins a visit from Chance and a classroom pizza party, and a banner for their classroom.

Third place was Kaela Duran's first grade class at Ruby Thomas Elementary School.

Below is a look at the winning submissions.

First Place

Teacher: Sara Polito

School: Kay Carl Elementary School

We chose to use ALL 800 kiddos in ALL of our classrooms at Kay Carl ES and created the Vegas Golden Knights emblem in gold plates on all of our 800 students heads and our blacktop along with our "gold" guy holding hockey sticks during our morning ceremony outside! We also wore Golden Knights gear and gold and black colors today to show our spirit and support for our new local hockey team! Go Vegas Golden Knights!

Second Place

Teacher: Michael Sarabyn

School: Roy Martin Middle School

Roy Martin Middle School, Mr. Sarabyn's Health class is entering the #VegasGoesGold contest sponsored by the Vegas Golden Knights. The whole process was student generated. This was an excellent learning experience for the school. New Golden Knights fans were made.

For five days leading to the home opener the classes were involved in learning about hockey through an education program I made. Boys and girls received a handout each day with a hockey topic. The students read about: What is hockey, ice hockey rink, hockey rink markings, hockey rules, and player positions. Students were challenged with assessments. The classes played an online quiz called kahoot. This was done each and every day. Students looked forward to learning about ice hockey and the Golden Knights team.

Roy Martin students made posters of support before their first game in Dallas. The boys and girls signed their creations. Children wrote a letter to their favorite player. These items were delivered to the Golden Knights offices last Wednesday. Yesterday the class designed Vegas Golden Knights themed banners. The messages were displayed throughout the whole school. Today the students were given an opportunity to dress in their Golden Knights gear or colors.

The classes were able to put their knowledge of hockey to test today. In the gym, floor hockey games were organized. You could feel, hear, and see the excitement.   Sportsmanship was on display as all activities were competitive and fair.

I was able to document our support on the #VegasGoesGold twitter account. Every day something new was added. The last two days student made videos were sent. I myself have been amazed at what the boys and girls at Roy Martin can accomplish.

As a Vegas Golden Knights season ticket holder, watching the students become new fans has been rewarding.   There has been hours of hard work involved. We are confident no other school can demonstrate their support for the Golden Knights like Roy Martin Middle School, Mr. Sarabyn's Health class.

Thank You,

Mr. Sarabyn's Health Class
