2021-22 REWIND
In a year hampered by injuries, the Golden Knights missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history last season after posting a 43-31-8 record and 94 points. Vegas was led by Jonathan Marchessault who put up 66 points (30G, 36A) in 76 games with Chandler Stephenson second with 64 points (21G, 43A) in 79 games. Shea Theodore led all VGK defensemen in scoring with 52 points (14G, 38A) in 78 games. Jack Eichel returned from neck surgery in February and notched 25 points (14G, 11A) in 34 games to end the season.
OPPOSITION UPDATE
Last season, Colorado won its third Stanley Cup in franchise history with a six-game triumph against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Avalanche finished second in the NHL with a 56-19-7 record and 119 points. Mikko Rantanen led the team in scoring with 92 points (36G, 56A) last year while defenseman Cale Makar used an 86-point season (28G, 58A) to win the first Norris Trophy of his career. Nathan MacKinnon posted 88 points (32G, 56A) in 2021-22 and signed an eight-year contract extension worth $100.8 million to make him the highest paid player in the league ($12.6 million/year).
KEYS TO THE GAME
Make Your Mark: As is common in the preseason, there will be players on both sides injected into the lineup looking to show off the progress they made in the offseason. Whether you're an established NHL player or someone looking to take the next step, the first preseason game is always a good measuring stick to see where your game is at.
Shake Off the Rust: Sunday's game will be the first competitive hockey for everyone since last season. It will be an opportunity to shake off summer hockey habits and get back into hockey season.
