OPPOSITION UPDATE
Calgary made it to the second round of the 2022 playoffs, falling to the Edmonton Oilers in five games. The Flames won the 2021-2022 Pacific Division with a record of 50-21-11 and a total of 111 points. They were led by their top goalscorer, Johnny Gaudreau, who put up 115 points (40G, 75A). Gaudreau joined the Columbus Blue Jackets during free agency during the offseason. Calgary's second highest scorer, Matthew Tkachuk (42G, 62A), was traded in a blockbuster to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar. Nazem Kadri was inked to a seven-year contract over the summer after winning the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.
Despite the personnel changes, the Flames have enjoyed a hot start to the 2022-23 campaign with wins in each of their first two games. After a season-opening 5-3 win against the Avalanche, Calgary won the first installment of the Battle of Alberta with a 4-3 triumph against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Kadri is tied for the team lead in scoring with three points (1G, 2A) with defenseman Michael Stone - brother of Vegas captain Mark Stone.
KEYS TO THE GAME
Get Back Into It: After two days in a row without a game, it will be vital that Vegas gets back to the mindset that has allowed the team to surge out to a 3-0-0 start.
Bring Your Best: The Calgary Flames were the best team in the division last season and are still projected to be top performers this year. This will arguably be Vegas' toughest challenge yet, so it's time to play smart and hard.
