The Vegas Golden Knights surrendered a 3-2 lead in the third period as the Columbus Blue Jackets picked up a 4-3-win Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
Josh Anderson scored the game's first goal at 4:04 of the first period, but Nate Schmidt's goal just 32 seconds later brought the score to 1-1. In the final three minutes of the third period, Reilly Smith and William Karlsson led a shorthanded rush into the Columbus zone which set up Jon Merrill's second goal of the season. Vegas carried the 2-1 lead into the second period but Artemi Panarin scored a late goal to tie the score at 2-2 heading into the final frame. After Cody Eakin gave Vegas the lead at 9:21 of the third, Cam Atkinson scored two goals in under three minutes to give the Blue Jackets a 4-3 lead. The Golden Knights fell flat in their bid to tie the score late and Columbus emerged with the win.
Eakin's goal put the Golden Knights in good position midway through the third period, but Atkinson's quick, game-changing goals removed the momentum that Vegas had harnessed.
Jon Merrill: Merrill's goal in the first period was the first shorthanded goal of his NHL career.
Reilly Smith: Smith notched two assists in the game for the Golden Knights.
Artemi Panarin: Panarin collected three points (1G, 2A) as Columbus claimed the win.
Cam Atkinson: Atkinson's effort in the third period was the difference as the Blue Jackets usurped the lead late in the game.
The Golden Knights gear up for a matchup against the Arizona Coyotes at 7 p.m. Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena for the second of four straight home games.
