WHL Roundup: Bjorkstrand scores 3 as Winterhawks batter Tri-City 7-0 @NHLdotcom

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored his first career hat trick on Saturday as the Portland Winterhawks blanked the host Tri-City Americans 7-0 in Western Hockey League action.

The 17-year-old rookie now has 20 goals and 40 points in 42 games, which leads all first-year skaters in scoring.

Brendan Burke stopped all 25 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season for Portland.

Brendan Leipsic had two goals and an assist for the Winterhawks (39-7-3), while Nicolas Petan and Seth Jones each scored once.

Petan leads the WHL in scoring with 85 points in 49 games while Leipsic is second with 81 points in 46 contests.

Chase De Leo had three assists for Portland and Troy Rutkowski, Josh Hanson and Shaun MacPherson chipped in with two assists apiece.

Wil Tomchuk and Mitch Topping were a team-worst minus-3 for the Americans (28-19-3) and Luke Lee-Knight stopped 33-of-40 shots in a losing cause.

Portland went 1 for 6 on the power play while Tri-City failed to score on either of its chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Kootenay 3, Regina 1; Moose Jaw 5, Swift Current 2; Edmonton 5, Brandon 2; Red Deer 3, Lethbridge 2 (SO); Prince George 4, Everett 0; Kelowna 6, Prince Albert 2; Medicine Hat Spokane and Victoria 4, Vancouver 1.

At Kennewick, Wash., Bjorkstrand opened the scoring 16:18 into the first period to put Portland up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Jones, Leipsic and Petan all scored in the span of a 1:44 midway through the second period to blow the game wide open and take a four-goal lead into the final period.

Bjorkstrand made it 5-0 2:19 into the third period and Leipsic scored his second goal of the night just over four minutes later.

Finally, Bjorkstrand completed his hat trick with Portland's final goal at 17:32.

At Regina, Mackenzie Skapski stopped 22 shots and Sam Reinhart scored the winning goal on the power play at 16:05 of the third period as Kootenay (23-25-2) handed the Pats (18-27-5) their seventh straight defeat.

At Swift Current, Sask., Justin Paulic made 32 saves and Sam Fioretti, Brayden Point and Justin Kirsch each had a goal and an assist as Moose Jaw (16-25-9) halted the Broncos' (24-21-5) seven-game win streak.


Oil Kings 5 Wheat Kings 2

At Edmonton, Curtis Lazar scored twice and Dylan Wruck had a goal and two assists as the Oil Kings (34-11-5) downed Brandon (18-28-4) to extend their win streak to four games.


Rebels 3 Hurricanes 2 (SO)

At Red Deer, Alta., Rhyse Dieno had a goal and an assist in regulation and then scored the shootout winner and Patrik Bartosak stopped 29-of-31 shots as the Rebels (26-20-6) halted their three-game slide by edging Lethbridge (23-21-7).

At Prince George, B.C., Mac Engel made 21 saves and Colin Jacobs scored two goals as the Cougars (15-28-6) blanked Everett (21-26-3) for their first win in four outings.


Rockets 6 Raiders 2

At Kelowna, B.C., Cody Fowlie scored twice and Tyson Baillie had a goal and two assists as the Rockets (37-10-3) won for the 14th times in 15 games by defeating Prince Albert (28-17-4).


Tigers 4 Chiefs 3

At Spokane, Wash., Cam Lanigan stopped 55-of-58 shots and Boston Leier had a goal and an assist as Medicine Hat (25-23-3) edged the Chiefs (30-18-2), who have dropped back-to-back contests.


Royals 4 Giants 1

At Victoria, Brandon Magee scored two goals and Patrik Polivka only had to make 17 saves as the Royals (27-17-3) pushed their win streak to seven games by beating Vancouver (12-38-0), which is winless in six contests.
