EVERETT, Wash. - The Portland Winterhawks became the first Western Hockey League team to clinch a playoff spot Tuesday thanks to a 6-0 demolition of the Everett Silvertips.
Portland was in control from the moment Everett defenceman Connor Cox inadvertently put a rebound into his own net on the power play 4:28 into the game. That began a four-goal burst that spanned just 3:38, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Ty Rattie scored two goals and Nicolas Petan added a goal and two assists for Portland (40-7-3), which is a perfect 8-0-0 against Everett this season. Taylor Leier, Presten Kopeck and Troy Rutkowski also scored for the Winterhawks, while Brendan Burke needed just 17 saves to post the shutout.
Daniel Cotton finished with 35 saves in taking the loss for Everett (21-28-3).
