Saturday night’s action saw defense prospects battle each other with Philippe Myers and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies taking a 5-3 win over Ivan Provorov and the Brandon Wheat Kings in both team’s opening game of the Memorial Cup Tournament.
After Brandon scored the opening goal, Rouyn-Noranda rattled off five straight tallies to take a 5-1 lead, including a power-play goal from Myers which made it 4-1 at 13:29 in the second period.
Myers shot from the point caught a piece of Wheat Kings goaltender, Jordan Papirny, but got over his shoulder and into net courtesy of a screen in front from Huskies forward Anthony-John Greer. Watch the goal on below...
Despite the loss, Provorov was named third star of the game. He had two shots on goal, including a breakaway in the second period in which he lost the handle after making a cut back move on Huskies goaltender Chase Marchand.
Provorov also recorded the primary assist on a long stretch pass to spring forward John Quenneville for a breakaway goal to cut the deficit to 5-3 with just over eight minutes left in the third period. Watch his assist below...
HUSKIES FALL IN GAME TWO
Playing on back-to-back nights, Rouyn-Noranda took on the host city of Red Deer and fell to the Rebels by a 5-2 score to bring their record to 1-1 in the round robin tournament.
Provorov and the Wheat Kings will get a chance to even up their record as they take on the OHL Champion London Knights tonight in the second contest for both teams. London is 1-0 after they earned a 6-2 victory in their opening game over Red Deer on Friday.
