(Voorhees, NJ) – With all of the new faces and young players currently on the Flyers’ roster, John Stevens and the coaching staff will put an emphasis on game play when the club opens its training camp on Friday.

Stevens and company have split the group into four teams, each one named for a Flyers Hockey Hall-of-Fame inductee. Teams Snider, Allen, Barber and Parent will compete for what is being called the “Clarke Cup,” or, in other words, a three-day round robin tournament that will take place from Friday through Sunday. The MVP of the tournament will receive the "Hart Trohpy," in honor of Hall-of-Fame broadcaster Gene Hart.

“[Flyers Assistant Coach] Terry Murray had the suggestion and we all agreed that it was a good one,” said Stevens. “The Flyers have such a rich tradition that we figured, why not take some of the Hall-of-Famers and put them as the names of the teams?”

Of course, fans will be quick to notice some of the line combinations that have been assembled for each team. The top lines for each will be Danny Briere centering Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble for Team Snider; Mike Richards centering Scott Hartnell and Sami Kapanen for Team Allen; R.J. Umberger centering Ben Eager and Stefan Ruzicka for Team Barber; and Jeff Carter centering Scottie Upshall and Joffrey Lupul for Team Parent.

The top defensive pairings are Randy Jones and Lasse Kukkonen for Team Snider; Braydon Coburn and Derian Hatcher for Team Allen; Kimmo Timonen and Jason Smith for Team Barber; and Denis Gauthier and Alexander Picard for Team Parent.

Stevens explained his rationale for breaking up the teams.

“What we tried to do as best we could was separate the veteran defensemen and make sure there was enough for every team. Then, we get one line of NHL players on every team and just mix in the pros and the younger players.

“We think every team has a chance with a nice mix of veteran presence and some good young players and some kids. I know it will be a real good situation for the NHL players and we’re excited about the format.”

The winners of the Clarke Cup, in addition to bragging rights, will receive a golf shirt with “Clarke Cup Champions, 2007” on the front.
