On January 9, the Philadelphia Flyers crushed the woeful California Golden Seals, 10-3, in a fight-filled game at the Spectrum. The game was tied, 2-2, after the first period before the Flyers went on to outscore the Seals, 4-0, in the middle stanza and 4-1 in the final frame.

Left winger Bill Lesuk, who scored 24 goals in 123 games with the Flyers, compiled his first and only hat trick. Young forwards Bobby Clarke (Gordie Howe Hat Trick with one goal, two assists and a second-period fight with Paul Shmyr) and Serge Bernier (two goals) also enjoyed multi-point games, while defenseman Rick Foley collected four assists. The game sees five fights break out: Bob "the Hound" Kelly vs. Carol Vadnais, Gary Dornhoefer vs. Ivan Boldirev, Barry Ashbee vs. Wayne Carleton and Clarke vs. Shmyr and Kelly vs. Shmyr.

Doug Favell earned the win in goal with 35 saves.
