On this date in 1998, the Flyers named St. Louis Blues Assistant Coach Roger Neilson the 12th head coach in club history. Neilson would replace Wayne Cashman, who was named an assistant coach.

The Flyers would post a 10-9-2 record over the final 21 games of the 1997-98 season and would lose to the Buffalo Sabres in an Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series, four games to one.

Neilson would coach the Flyers over parts of three seasons (1997-98 to 1999-2000), compiling a 76-52-32 record.
