June 21, 2002...Flyers Acquire First Round Pick

On this date in 2002, the Flyers traded Ruslan Fedotenko, Tampa Bay's second round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and Phoenix's second round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft to the Lightning in exchange for Tampa Bay's first round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

With the fourth overall selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the Flyers selected defenseman Joni Pitkanen.

After playing one more season with Karpat Oulu in Finland, Pitkanen joined the Flyers for the 2003-04 season. He recorded eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points and 44 penalty minutes in 71 regular season games during his rookie season. Pitkanen was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team for 2003-04.

This past season, Pitkanen registered 41 points (6G,35A) in 76 regular season games for the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. His 35 assists were second on the team. He posted seven points (3G,4A) in 21 games as the Phantoms captured the Calder Cup Championship. He was a league-best +13 during the playoffs.
