June 1, 1988...Holmgren Named Head Coach

Paul Holmgren was the first former Flyer to be named the team's head coach.
On this date in 1988, the Flyers named Paul Holmgren as the team's new head coach. Holmgren became the first former Flyer to be named the team's head coach.

After three seasons as an assistant coach (1985-86 through 1987-88), Holmgren was promoted to head coach, replacing Mike Keenan.

In four seasons as head coach (from 1988-89 to 1991-92), Holmgren compiled a 107-126-31 record. He led the Flyers to the Wales Conference Finals in 1989.

After an 8-14-2 start to the 1991-92 season, Flyers General Manager Russ Farwell replaced Holmgren as head coach with Bill Dineen on December 4, 1991.
