The Flyers opened the game with a 3-0 first-period lead on goals by Brian Propp (twice) and Tim Kerr. Calgary responded by scoring the next three goals of the contest. The first period ended in a 4-4 tie.
The second period saw six goals scored with each team posting three.
The 7-7 third-period tie was broken by Kent Nilsson's fourth goal of the game to give the Flames an 8-7 lead. Eighteen seconds after Nilsson's goal, the Flyers' Tom Gorence scored to tie the game at 8-8.
Flyers defenseman and former Flame Brad Marsh scored his first goal of the season at 14:49 of the third period to give the Flyers the 9-8 lead which they would hold on to for the victory.
