The Philadelphia Flyers have named former NHL player Chris Therien as their new color analyst on radio broadcasts. He joins play-by-play announcer Tim Saunders in the booth for all Flyers games broadcast on SportsRadio 610 WIP.
“We're very fortunate to have Chris join our broadcast team," said Shawn Tilger, the club’s senior vice president of business operations. "Since retiring a few seasons ago, he has followed our team closely and groomed his broadcasting skills in various roles on Comcast SportsNet, TSN, the NHL Network and WIP. We're looking forward to Chris providing our fans with insight and interesting analysis.”
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m really looking forward to working alongside Tim Saunders and with the team,” said Therien. “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Flyers family again.”
Most recently, Therien served as an analyst on Comcast SportsNet’s Post-Game Live show, which follows Flyers games. In addition, Therien was a part-time member of the WIP morning show with Angelo Cataldi as well as the Glen Macnow show.
Therien played 11 seasons for the Flyers during two different stints (1994-95 to 2003-04 and 2005-06), recording 29 goals and 130 assists for 159 points and 583 penalty minutes in 753 regular season games. He also played 11 games for the Dallas Stars during the 2003-04 season. His 753 regular season games as a Flyers are most among Flyers defenseman and are fourth most on the team’s All-Time List.
Therien replaces former Flyer Brian Propp and becomes the third former Flyers player to enter the team’s radio broadcast booth. Former goalie Bobby Taylor was the longtime color analyst with the late Gene Hart.
WIP personality Brian Startare will be the in-studio host to provide additional fan-friendly and interactive features during the broadcast. Startare will broadcast new interactive segments pre-game, between periods and post-game to bring Flyers fans closer to the action both on and off the ice, including out-of-town scores, league news and notes, game calls and highlights, player profiles and post-game interviews live from the Flyers locker room.
The Flyers open their 2008-09 season against the New York Rangers at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. For more information on partial ticket packages or full season tickets, please call the Flyers at 215-218-PUCK (7825).
