The National Hockey League announced today that Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds is the 'Third Star' of the week.
Simmonds has four goals in the first three games of the season, including both game-winning goals, to lead the Flyers to a 2-1-0 record, which is currently tied for the Metropolitan Division lead.
He leads the team, and is tied for second in the NHL, in goals scored (4), and is tied for the NHL lead in game-winning goals (2) early in the NHL season. Simmonds also leads all Flyers forwards in time-on-ice thus far, averaging over 20 minutes at 20:03.
On opening night in San Jose, Simmonds broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period, then again broke a 3-3 tie midway through the third period to put the Flyers on top for good. His second goal of the night was also his 400th point in the NHL. He capped the night off with an empty-netter to post a hat trick - the first one in Flyers history in a season-opening game.
After taking a loss in Los Angeles the next night, Simmonds entered last Saturday's game at Anaheim with a new center in Valtteri Filppula, after Nolan Patrick had been in that position for the first two games. Simmonds led all Flyers with four shots on goal and the most ice time of any Flyer vs. the Ducks at 20:52.
