The National Hockey League announced that Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has been named to the All-Rookie team for the 2015-16 season. Voting was conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the end of the regular season.
Below is the full 2015-16 All-Rookie Team:
John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks
Shayne Gostisbehere, Philadelphia Flyers
Colton Parayko, St. Louis Blues
Jack Eichel, Buffalo Sabres
Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers
Artemi Panarin, Chicago Blackhawks
The announcement came following the NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas in which Gostisbehere finished runner-up in the Calder Memorial Trophy race to Blackhawks’ Artemi Panarin.
Gostisbehere recorded 17 goals and 29 assists for 46 points, which set a new franchise record for goals by a rookie defenseman. He also led all rookie defensemen in the NHL in goals (17), assists (29) and overall scoring with his 46 points. Of his 17 goals, 16 of them either tied the game, gave the Flyers the lead, or became the game-winning goal.
Gostisbehere, who was recalled from the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, on Nov. 14, also had a 15-game scoring streak from Jan. 19 to Feb. 20 that set two Flyers records: Longest scoring streak by any Flyers rookie and longest scoring streak by any Flyers defenseman, in addition to setting one NHL record: Longest scoring streak by a rookie defenseman in NHL history.
He was also named the winner of the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the Flyers’ best defenseman, as voted by a panel of sportswriters and sportscasters. He became the youngest Flyer ever to win the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the Flyers’ best defenseman, doing so two weeks before his 23rd birthday.
