The first fan vote is in the books and the winner of the Wild Card round of the 2014-15 Highlight of the Year is Michael Del Zotto's shorthanded, game-winning goal against the New York Rangers on Feb. 28.
Del Zotto's goal pulled in nearly 200 votes and a majority of 37 percent of the four highlights in the Wild Card round.
The highlight unfolded as Sean Couturier held the puck in the middle of the Rangers end and sent a no-look pass to a pinching Del Zotto. His shot from the left circle beat Talbot up high and over his glove, just inside the far post 1:19 into the third as the Flyers were killing off a penalty.
In that game, Del Zotto also led the Flyers charge, logging nearly 25 minutes (24:45) of ice time and firing seven shots on net, while blocking four shot attempts from the Rangers. The win also helped the Flyers snap a four-game losing streak against the Rangers.
The highlight now enters the field of eight highlights and will take on Wayne Simmonds¹ brilliant move to give the Flyers their first shootout win of the year in a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 6.
