POSTGAME FIVE: Flyers Stymie Islanders

by Brian Smith | / Philadelphia Flyers

Four different Flyers scored, Matt Read had a three-point afternoon and Steve Mason made 20 saves for his 29th career shutout as the Flyers took a 4-0 win.  The Flyers controlled the game from the start, outshooting the Islanders 11-2 in the first period, but didn’t get on the board until early in the second period when Michael Raffl scored 1:27 into the frame.  Evgeny Medvedev followed that up with his third goal of the year at 8:33 of the second.  Matt Read made it a 3-0 game with 9:02 left in the third, and Sean Couturier finished out the scoring with a tipped goal with 4:46 left.  Mason took his ninth win of the season, while Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 in a losing cause.

The Flyers jumped on the Islanders from the opening faceoff, registering six shot attempts in the first 67 seconds of the game alone (two on goal, two that missed, two blocked).  They ended up outshooting the Islanders 11-2 in the period and leading them 25-11 in shot attempts, a significant achievement that hopefully marks the start of a turnaround for a Flyers team that had been outshot 437-340 in first periods before today’s game and has been outscored 36-17 in the first.

1ST – Matt Read: Recorded his eighth career game of three or more points and his first since Dec. 4, 2013. Three of those eight games have come against the Islanders.  Read has had 11 shots on goal over the past two games.

2ND – Steve Mason: Recorded his 29th career shutout and his second career blanking of the Islanders.  It’s his third shutout of the season.

3RD – Evgeny Medvedev: Scored his third goal of the year while playing 20:24.  He had three shots on goal and six total attempts – one that was blocked and two that missed.  He also blocked one shot.

The Flyers outshot the Islanders 11-2 in the first period.  They had been outshot 437-340 in the first period of games this season before today, and had been outscored 36-17… In addition to his assist, Radko Gudas had four shots on goal, three hits, and four blocked shots… Nick Schultz played his 999th career game.  He had nine shot attempts – five of which were blocked and three that missed.

“That’s what we said before we went out – we need a big start in our building.  Our first line went out there and just dominated that first shift. People went wild in the stands.  That gives you energy for the next shift.”

(Michael Raffl)

I was really happy with the effort, right from the first shift there. Giroux’s line really took it to the Islanders’ zone there. And that just kind of set the tone for the entire game. There is no letting off the gas today. That’s the type of effort that wins hockey games. At no point in this game were we ever doubtful that we would come away with a win.”
