The Flyers rebounded from allowing the game’s first goal with three of their own in the second period and held on for an eventual 4-2 win over the Blues. After a scoreless first period, Robby Fabbri put the Blues up 1-0 1:35 into the second period. But the Flyers responded with a goal from Michael Raffl less than two minutes later, and subsequent goals from Matt Read at 6:39 and Claude Giroux at 18:06 gave the Flyers a 3-1 advantage after two periods. David Backes picked up a power play goal 7:37 into the third to pull the Blues within a goal, but the Flyers killed off another shorthanded situation and kept the Blues at bay until Ryan White deposited an empty netter with 1.7 seconds remaining. Michal Neuvirth stopped 35 of 37 in taking the win, while Brian Elliott turned aside 25 of 28.
Michael Raffl scored to draw the Flyers even at 1-1 less than two minutes after the Blues scored. Raffl’s goal was the first a Flyer had scored in over 170 minutes of play, 172:47 to be exact, in St. Louis. It was also the first of three straight goals that would be enough to hold off a Blues team that pressured the Flyers most of the third period including a full two minutes with an extra attacker.
1ST - Claude Giroux: Scored a highlight reel goal, which turned out to be the game-winning tally, and added an assist for his third multi-point game in his last four outings.
2ND - Robby Fabbri: Recorded the first Blues goal, his fifth of the season, to get St. Louis out to an early 1-0 lead in the game. He finished the game with a plus-minus rating of +1.
3RD - Michal Neuvirth: Made 35 saves on 37 shots, which moved him to the best save percentage in the league among the 41 goaltenders with enough minutes played to qualify for the NHL leaders list (.938).
The Flyers earned their first win in St. Louis since December 17, 2005… The Flyers have won their last four consecutive road games - their last four-game road winning streak was Dec. 2-15, 2011, when they strung together five road wins in a row… Claude Giroux had a goal and two assists for three points and now has 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 29 games. He has eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points in the 19 games since November 1. It was Giroux’s 32nd career game of three points or more and his second this season… Nick Schultz was responsible for seven of the Flyers’ 15 blocked shots… Ryan White and Radko Gudas paced the Flyers with seven hits apiece… Gudas was plus-4, which ties his career high.
“I think we’ve showed – not just in the two recent games – being able to come back and stay with it. I think the last couple of weeks here we’ve been able to answer. Whether it’s been a bad bounce of the puck, a goal against, something negative happens on the ice, our bench has been able to push back. That’s kind of manifested itself in being able to come back in games.” (Dave Hakstol)
“We came here for two points and followed the game plan. We had a great team effort on the road. It was a huge two points for us.” (Michal Neuvirth)
