POSTGAME 5: Flyers gain a point; fall short in overtime

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers
Zemgus Girgensons scored at 2:29 of overtime to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-3 victory over the Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center… Girgensons goal came when he broke in alone on Philadelphia goalie Steve Mason on the 3-on-3 extra session to score his first of the season between Mason's pads… The game was the third straight game to go past regulation play for the Flyers, who fell to 3-1-1 on home ice this year… Brayden Schenn twice tied the game up for the Flyers, both in the third period, when he scored to make it 2-2 and added the tying goal with under a minute left in the regulation and the extra man on the ice to get the Flyers a point in the loss… Flyers forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare left with a lower-body injury with 5:52 left in the first period and did not return.

The turning point in tonight’s loss for the Flyers came in the fast-paced extra session… After a golden scoring chance in which Buffalo netminder Chad Johnson made an acrobatic save, the Sabres quickly turned that into their advantage and less than 40 seconds later former Flyer Carlo Colaiacovo sent Zemgus Girgensons on a breakaway that would seal the game and the extra point for the Sabres.

1ST - Brayden Schenn: Scored to tie the game up at 2-2 midway through the third period, then provided the game-tying-goal with under a minute left in regulation to send the game to overtime… It was Schenn’s first two-goal game of the season.

2ND - Ryan O’Reilly: Recorded an assist on the Sabres first goal and logged the second most minutes on the ice at 21:27… He was also 62 percent on face-offs.

3RD - Rasmus Ristolainen: The one player to log more ice time than O’Reilly was Ristolainen, who recorded over 25 minutes of TOI at 25:02 and had the most shifts on the night (37).

The Flyers went beyond regulation for the fourth time this season and for the third consecutive game - The last time the Flyers had four extra-time games in their first eight games of a season was 2008-09… The Flyers have recorded nine of a possible 12 points in their last six games, going 4-1-1… Brayden Schenn recorded his 10th career two-goal game, while brother Luke Schenn recorded his eighth career two-assist game and his 15th career multi-point game… Radko Gudas was credited with seven hits and now has 34 on the season, which at the moment is the second-most in the NHL.

“It’s chaos out there. He made a great save coming across and then a couple seconds later back on a breakaway… it’s tough out there. It’s chance after chance; it’s grade A chances.  That’s why so many games are ended in overtime. There’s just so many quality chances that eventually a guy is going to score.”
(Steve Mason, on 3 on 3 overtime)

“Every game is a little bit different. We didn’t have our best night and we couldn’t find anything on a consistent basis. Obviously there are things that we didn’t do well enough tonight. At the same time, like I said we stuck with it in one way shape or form enough to get it to over time.”
(Dave Hakstol)

"I’ve got to put pucks in the net. It’s been eight games. Obviously, it’s a little frustrating but I’ve got to stick with it. Obviously, I’m not happy that I get two second assists in one game and one primary but the bottom line you need to make a difference in the game today as a line and that’s might have made a difference”
