POSTGAME 5: Disrupting the Devils' Den

by Brian Smith | / Philadelphia Flyers

The Devils erased a 2-1 Flyers second-intermission lead, but the Flyers responded with three goals in less than five minutes that jumpstarted them to a 6-3 win. New Jersey took the lead early on a power play goal by Tyler Kennedy with 7:59 left in the frame, but that was answered by a blast from Shayne Gostisbehere just over five minutes later. Bradyen Schenn scored the only goal of the second period, picking up a power play goal 7:55 in to give the Flyers a 2-1 second intermission lead. The Devils tied the game on a goal from Jordin Tootoo 9:24 into the third period, but that didn’t stand up to a sudden onslaught from the Flyers – goals from Wayne Simmonds (PP) at 12:22, Nick Cousins at 13:22, and Jake Voracek at 17:12 made it a 5-2 game. Kyle Palmieri got one back at 17:44, but Ryan White finished off the scoring into an empty net with 1:52 to play. Michal Neuvirth stopped 21 shots to earn the win, while Cory Schneider turned away 20 of the 25 shots he saw.

As the third period approached its halfway point, the Flyers had just completed a huge penalty kill before Tootoo’s goal at 9:24 took the wind out of their sails. But Simmonds got the sails going again in a big way when he responded with his own power play goal just under three minutes later. It started off the three-goal rush that put the game out of reach.

1st – Brayden Schenn: Recorded a goal and two assists for his seventh career three-point game, and second of the season. He had a goal and two assists Jan. 5 vs. Montreal. Schenn led the Flyers with four shots on goal.

2nd – Claude Giroux: Recorded three assists for his 12th career game of three assists or more, and second this season. He had three assists on Jan. 13 vs. Boston.

3rd – Wayne Simmonds: Scored the goal that started the Flyers’ final push, and also added an assist. He led the Flyers with four hits.

The Flyers scored six goals in a road game at New Jersey for just the second time since 1989. They had a 6-3 win at Prudential Center on November 24, 2008. Prior to that, the last time the Flyers scored that many at New Jersey was in a 7-5 win on November 11, 1989… Ryan White recorded a goal and an assist for his fourth career multi-point game and second against the Devils. All four have been 1G-1A games, with the last coming on March 8, 2015 here at Prudential Center… R.J. Umberger recorded his second two-assist game of the season, with the other coming on Oct. 8 at Tampa Bay… Shayne Gostisbehere scored his 11th goal of the year to extend his scoring streak to 13 games. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, it’s the fourth-longest point streak by any rookie since 1988.

“In the past for us you might have seen a Flyers team roll over and die a little bit or go into overtime, but the way we responded was pretty cool and just shows the direction this team’s going in.”

(Shayne Gostisbehere)

“We’re not satisfied until we’re in the playoffs.  We’ve got a lot more work to do. This is a step forward. We just have to build on it and continue to push forward.”

(Wayne Simmonds)
