The Philadelphia Flyers released today new details around the team’s upcoming 50th anniversary season, including a commemorative logo, a special 50th anniversary jersey, an anniversary alumni game, and more–exactly 50 years to the day that the National Hockey League officially awarded Ed Snider and Philadelphia the expansion franchise.
“It is hard to believe we are going to be celebrating our 50th anniversary,” said Flyers Chairman Ed Snider. “It feels like it was just yesterday when the National Hockey League awarded us an expansion franchise. In our first season, The Hockey News thought we would be the team least likely to succeed, but were they ever wrong! Now here we are, with memories of two Stanley Cups, the Russian Game in 1976, the 35-game unbeaten streak, the five-overtime win against Pittsburgh in the 2000 playoffs, coming back against Boston in 2010 down three games, two Winter Classics, and so many more.
“My favorite part has been sharing these moments with all of the players who define Flyers Hockey, with the hundreds of employees who work tirelessly to create a great fan experience, and with the millions of dedicated, loyal, and passionate Flyers fans who have made our first 50 years so incredible. Together we truly have something special."
In honor of the 50th anniversary of both clubs, the Flyers Alumni will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni and renew their rivalry in a special, cross-state contest next season, set to take place at the Wells Fargo Center in 2017. An official game date and ticket information will be announced at a later time.
The club also unveiled today a commemorative 50th anniversary logo that will be used for the entirety of the 2016-17 season. The mark incorporates the familiar keystone icon featured on current third jersey captain’s patches and will be featured on all game jerseys during the 2016-17 season.
For a limited number of games during the 2016-17 season, the team will wear a newly-created 50th Anniversary Jersey. The special jersey, along with the game schedule of when it will be worn, will be unveiled at a later date. A teaser photo of the new design will be shown to fans during this evening’s game vs. the Anaheim Ducks.
Throughout the 2016-17 season, the team will honor its first 50 years with five special Heritage Nights. Opening Night will celebrate 50 years of Flyers Hockey and feature those who have been inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame. Other Heritage Nights include Captains Night, Tough Guys Night, Goalies Night, and Playoff Heroes Night.
The 2016-17 season will also see the release of a commemorative 50th anniversary coffee table book penned by Hockey Hall of Fame Writer and Author of the Flyers 30th Anniversary publication Full Spectrum, Jay Greenberg.
The Flyers have additionally announced new benefits for 2016-17 season ticket members, including a 50th Anniversary Jersey for each account, access to heritage nights, and the first opportunity to purchase tickets to the Alumni Game.
