Highlight of the Year: Semifinals Part 2

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

Claude Giroux and Michael Del Zotto will battle it out to meet Steve Mason for the last spot in the Finals of the 2015 Highlight of the Year tournament.

This week’s semifinal vote features Del Zotto as a wild card entry after earning victories over three highlights in that round and a head-to-head vote over Wayne Simmonds’ shootout move against the Senators in the quarterfinals.

Claude Giroux made it to the semifinals by defeating himself. In a match up vs. Colorado on Dec. 31, and a toe drag and score highlight against the Maple Leafs on Dec. 21, it was Giroux weaving through the Avalanche on the power-play that came out on top.

HIGHLIGHT #1: In Colorado, on New Year’s Eve, defenseman Mark Streit kicks off a rush on the power-play from the Flyers zone and leaves a drop pass just beyond the blue line for Giroux and the captain takes it from there.

Giroux weaves his way into the Avalanche end skating past both penalty-killing forwards, d-men Jan Hejda and Erik Johnson before going in all alone and beating goalie Semyon Varlamov low blocker to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead midway though the third period.

HIGHLIGHT #2: Sean Couturier kicks off Del Zotto’s highlight when he crosses into the Rangers zone on a penalty kill. Holding onto the puck, he sends a no-look pass to a pinching Del Zotto, who chips one in up high and over Cam Talbot’s glove, just inside the far post to snap a 2-2 tie.

The goal would stand and Del Zotto would record nearly 25 minutes (24:45) of ice time, as well as fire seven shots on net, while blocking four shot attempts to help the Flyers snap a four-game losing streak against the Rangers.

Fans can vote as many times as they want, but watch each highlight below before casting your vote…
