Highlight of the Year: Quarterfinal 2

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

Moving on to the top portion of the quarterfinal bracket, this week’s vote is an all Flyers-Penguins affair featuring Pierre-Edouard Bellemare going up against Steve Mason in the Flyers Highlight of the Year tournament.

HIGHLIGHT #1: In his rookie season, and first time playing in North America, Bellemare established himself as a gritty player and hard-nosed penalty killer. Bellemare also learned pretty quickly about the Flyers-Penguins rivalry.

In their second meeting of the year, and first at the Wells Fargo Center, on Jan. 20, Bellemare dropped the gloves with Pens’ forward Bobby Farnham for his first professional fight with the score knotted at 1-1. The Flyers would go on to win the game, 3-2, in overtime in a game that saw 93 penalty minutes - 59 from the Flyers and 34 from the Penguins.

HIGHLIGHT #2: In the Flyers last meeting of the season with the Pens, goaltender Steve Mason proved that it was going to be difficult getting the puck past him in this Sunday afternoon match-up on NBC.

Scoreless in the first period, the Pens were denied an early lead when a rebound kicked out to forward Craig Adams, who had a look at a wide open net. Mason lunged across to make a spectacular diving glove save on Adams 5:51 into the opening period. The save was one of 46 he made on the afternoon to backstop the Flyers to a 4-1 victory on Apr. 5.
