Highlight of the Year: Quarterfinal 1

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

With the Wild Card round decided (see bracket banner above), the second week of the 2015 Highlight of the Year is upon us and pits Captain vs. Captain.

The first quarterfinal highlight looks at a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair between the Flyers and Maple Leafs in Toronto on Dec. 20, while the second is a dazzling display of speed and finesse against the Avalanche on Dec. 31.

HIGHLIGHT #1: Claude Giroux takes a perfectly threaded pass across the zone from Jakub Voracek at the side of the net. Instead of firing a one-timer, Giroux holds it, waits out Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier and from a sharp angle places one up high and just inside the post to give the Flyers a 5-3 lead late in the second period.

The goal was one of two on the night for Giroux, which was also part of a four-point night  for the Flyers captain in a 7-4 win at the Air Canada Centre.

HIGHLIGHT #2: In Colorado, on New Year’s Eve, defenseman Mark Streit kicks off a rush on the power-play from the Flyers zone and leaves a drop pass just beyond the blue line for Giroux and the captain takes it from there.

Giroux weaves his way into the Avalanche end skating past both penalty-killing forwards, d-men Jan Hejda and Erik Johnson before going in all alone and beating goalie Semyon Varlamov low blocker to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead midway though the third period.
