Steve Mason defeated rookie Pierre-Edouard Bellemare’s first NHL fight in the quarterfinal round and survived a close vote with back-up Rob Zepp in the semifinals to advance to the this point.
Claude Giroux defeated his own highlight (a nifty toe-drag and snap shot up high on Toronto’s Jonathan Bernier) in the quarterfinals and just last week he took out Michael Del Zotto’s top-shelf, shorthanded, game-winning goal against his former team - the New York Rangers.
HIGHLIGHT #1: With the Flyers taking on intra-state rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Steve Mason set the tone early and proved that it was going to be difficult for the Pens to get the puck past him in the final meeting of the year.
Scoreless in the first period, a turnover and quick shot on net forced a rebound that kicked out to Craig Adams, who had a look at an open net. Mason lunged across to make a diving glove save. The save was one of 46 he made on the afternoon to backstop the Flyers to a 4-1 victory on Apr. 5.
HIGHLIGHT #2: In Colorado, on New Year’s Eve, defenseman Mark Streit kicks off a rush on the power-play from the Flyers zone and leaves a drop pass just beyond the blue line for Giroux and the captain takes it from there.
Giroux weaves his way into the Avalanche end skating past both penalty-killing forwards, d-men Jan Hejda and Erik Johnson before going in all alone and beating goalie Semyon Varlamov low blocker to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead midway though the third period.
Fans can vote as many times as they want, but the polls close at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3 with the winner revealed on Friday.
