Greenberg: Top moments of the week

Flyers columnist on the best plays and moments of the week

by Jay Greenberg @NHLFlyers

Moment - Anthony Stolarz's first NHL win in his first start. The heartiest congratulations came from Steve Mason.

Adrenaline rush - Ivan Provorov's first NHL goal to put the Flyers up 2-1 in Tampa. Rookie's little leap afterwards told it all. WATCH IT AGAIN BELOW…

Pass - By Nick Cousins to Simmonds, who converted it against Calgary's Chad Johnson with a nifty move to the backhand.

Transition Pass - Quickly by Schenn after Mark Streit breakup, feeding two-on-one against the Panthers that Nick Cousins converted on feed by Simmonds.

Pass to himself - Andrew MacDonald threw the puck off the end boards, chased it down, and fed out to Chris VandeVelde for first goal against the Rangers.

Save - By Steve Mason on Lightning's Nikita Kucherov from up the slot. Tracked the puck through multiple legs and somehow didn't give up a rebound. It was all much harder than the goalie made it look. Not acrobatic, just textbook.

Single Game Performance - Mason at Florida. 38 saves, including one point-blank on Jaromir Jagr. Lost his shutout in the final seconds on a deflection. Mason did not surrender a goal all week that he should have stopped.

Shot - By Wayne Simmonds to top corner, stick side off a two-on-one, to beat Florida's Roberto Luongo,

Player - Simmonds, two goals, three-assists, yet another sun-blotting screen on Shayne Gostisbehere's goal against Rangers, plenty of physicality as always.

Defenseman - Ivan Provorov. Second straight week.

Effort - All four lines, 5-3 victory Sunday night against the Flames might have been the best of the season so far.

Goal Saving Defensive Play - Florida's Colton Sceviour faced an empty net on a rebound after another Mason save through traffic. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare got his stick on the puck to prevent a shot and save the shutout for a few more minutes.

Play Beyond His Years - On a two-on-one, Konecny stayed wide of defenseman Michael Matheson. It didn't help the shooting angle, but created more room for Weise, who had an easy goal on his backhand after Luongo couldn't hang on to Konecny's wrist shot.

One-on-one move - By Scott Laughton down the boards, going inside to cleanly beat Lightning's Viktor Hedman at the blueline during the third period. There is ample evidence Laughton makes better plays off the wing than center, hinting at his true position.

Gesture - Konecny went after Brandon Pirri after the Ranger clobbered Brandon Manning. Rookie took a minor that cancelled a power play, not what you would want him to do in the third period of a one-goal game. But early in the contest, it sent a message to the Rangers and said even more about the kid to his teammates.

Opportunity - To Cousins. Sean Couturier will be out four-to six weeks. A productive second line will ease some of the pressure as Jake Voracek and Giroux try to emerge from scoring slumps.

Break - Voracek's first goal in seven games went off Calgary's Mark Giordano and the crossbar, pardons delivered by the hockey gods. Jake had suffered long enough.

Forecheck leading to a goal -- By Brayden Schenn on Flames goalie Chad Johnson, forcing turnover that Chris VandeVelde converted.

Tip - On that play by VandeVelde. Backhanded, off Roman Lyubimov's shot. Second goal in two games for VandeVelde. You can only hope to contain him…
